We had a wonderful time hosting Endicott College f

We had a wonderful time hosting Endicott College for a service day at the farm. It was heartwarming to see this group of six students come together to make a difference in our community.

Endicott team weeded this year's new raspberry row, a hedgerow of strawberries, and winter savory.

We truly appreciate their hard work, and we're grateful for all they accomplished. Thank you, @endicottcollege !

We love harvesting, and we know our volunteers do too. Something must happen in our brain during harvesting that releases dopamine 😌

Feedback from our volunteers is that harvesting is so gratifying. Seeing what you spent months planning, seeding, and weeding come to fruition… feels incredible.

There’s a road map to every plant we harvest on the farm and sometimes the road map looks different season to season.

Onions are the first plants I started in the greenhouse on March 1st. They were started in open trays to save on room since the rented table space limited us and led to the seedlings' roots being too bare at planting time. The onions that didn't have sufficient soil contact were lost. That happened mainly with Cabernet, the red variety, which is a little slower to size up.

Onions do well with at least 1" of
water per week while bulbing, so this season led to larger onions than we had last year.

We grow three varieties - a red storage onion, a yellow storage onion, and this white variety- Sierra Blanca, which can be harvested and eaten as a fresh onion and cured in the greenhouse. Generally, for the storage onions, we wait for the necks to become soft and the green tops to fall before harvesting, but this year, that didn't quite happen. We were well past the roughly 100 days to maturity mark, so they may take a little longer to cure- and for those green tops to fully dry out and turn brown.

Once they've sufficiently dried out on the tables in the greenhouse, we'll trim the tops and the roots and store them in a cooler area to extend the season and provide to the community into the fall.

We had Seven team members from @northshorebankma on the farm last week. They harvested a slew of veggies/ herbs, helped seed for the next season in the herb garden, cut back potato stalks, did some planting, and even helped us with the curing process for our onions.

It means so much to us to have companies like
@northshorebankma out on the farm, furthering our farm’s mission and taking the meaning of corporate citizenship to heart.

Once the hoop house is complete, we’re looking forward to drying herbs on the farm in larger quantities, teaching classes without worrying about the weather, having a larger space to sort and organize seeds, and much more!

Today was bittersweet as we said goodbye to our fa

Today was bittersweet as we said goodbye to our fantastic youth crew. We are going to miss them so much! It's always hard to see them go, but we are so proud of all they have accomplished with us.

Teebh, our youth crew lead, had a blast working with students and getting to know our volunteer team. She loved getting to experience people from all walks of life and backgrounds.

Check out this tomato hornworm Farmer Cj recently found hanging out on our tomato plants.

The tomato hornworm, and its close relative, the tobacco hornworm, are common pests on many nightshade plants. We've found them hiding in our tomatoes, tomatillos, and peppers. These fast-growing caterpillars are in the larva stage of the five-spotted hawkmoth and can do a tremendous amount of damage quickly.
They can spread foliar diseases as well, so remove them from plants as soon as you can find them! They can even overwinter as pupa in the soil and emerge the following season, so it's best to rotate your crops each year according to family.

As a farm, we genuinely believe that Food is medicine. The right foods can significantly impact our physical and mental health. Eating a diet rich in whole, unprocessed foods can help prevent chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and even some types of cancer. And when we do get sick, certain foods can help us recover more quickly. For example, consuming foods high in vitamin C can help boost our immune system and fight off colds and other infections. We encourage prioritizing nutrient-dense foods in your diet to support overall well-being.

They bring so much energy and enthusiasm to our team, and we couldn't be more grateful for their hard work and dedication.

It's inspiring to see such a talented group of young people working together and positively impacting our community. We are proud to have them on board!

This weeks weather proved challenging but the team and farmer @calamityjulianne were able to pivot and navigate harvest accordingly.

Held by Greenbelt, the conservation restriction ensures that Tillie’s Farm and Newhall Fields will remain permanently protected as a farm and public open space for all to enjoy.

Our youth crew program is something we are incredibly proud of. For seven weeks, July through August, we can provide paid positions for youth ages 14-17

MassHire @masshireycc funds the Newhall Fields Youth Crew
Its funding source is @commcorp_ma youth works.

Because of these two phenomenal partners, we have more consistent help on the farm during Harvest.

80% of the food we grow is donated to our local food pantries and distributed through farm-to-family on-farm pickup programs.

Our mission is to strengthen community access to locally grown, nourishing, affordable food for everyone while caring for our climate, soils, and planet.

Youth crew is one major piece to furthering our mission.
